Simply put, telematics is the gathering of data and transmission of that data across communications networks for use in business processes. Telematics covers a wide range of technologies, from GPS handsets to sensors and more. Some companies might not be aware of the benefits of telematics but, when properly deployed - and the data properly analyzed and acted upon - telematics can really help companies improve their bottom line.



The Federal Railroad Administration and the North American railroad industry have been developing various elements for a Positive Train Control (PTC) system. In this connection, the Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) was in search of a rugged and reliable platform to be deployed on trains.



Schlumberger Water Services (SWS) is optimizing its services for management of sustainable groundwater resources. SWS is utilizing machine-to-machine (M2M) communications modules from Telit Wireless Solutions with the Schlumberger Diver-NETZ solution. This helps monitor groundwater levels for cities, water boards and mining applications.

M2M Fastrack Xtend dual serial port IESM boards have been developed to enable customers to add a second satellite communications link and connect other hardware to the modem. The IESM daughterboard for the FXT003/009 modem offers flexibility by including a high-accuracy GPS module (Sierra Wireless XM0110 SiRFstar 4 GPS chip) together with two additional serial ports.



Towers Watson, recently signed a strategic alliance with Verizon subsidiary, Hughes Telematics, Incorporated (HTI). The new alliance is expected to provide personal line U.S auto insurers with complete data services for usage-based insurance (UBI) programs.



To further improve end-to-end connectivity in cars, Canada-based Intelligent Mechatronic Systems Inc. (IMS) has added three data analytics partners to its already robust, end-to-end usage-based insurance (UBI) programs. According to IMS, the addition of three data analytics partners will offer customers a choice in data insights and intelligence.



ORBCOMM Inc., a satellite data communications company focused on two-way M2M communications, recently announced it will provide wireless data services to inthinc Technology Solutions Inc., a provider of telematics, fleet management and driver safety solutions, for its breakthrough technology applications in the heavy equipment, oil and gas and commercial fleet industries in the U.S.
