With navigation rapidly becoming an integral feature of mobile devices, Skyworks Solutions (News - Alert) Inc., announced that it is ramping its global positioning system (GPS) and global navigation satellite system (GNSS) solutions for Samsung Electronics, the smartphone provider.

Skyworks' newest device SKY65702-11, according to company officials, is a receive-only front-end solution that requires no external component. As it uses surface mount technology, the end product is a compact, highly manufacturable and low-cost solution.

The device has an integrated low-noise amplifier and a filter that is specially designed for GPS/GNSS receiver applications. The filter ensures good performance.

“By leveraging core capabilities, Skyworks is delivering innovative solutions that help drive better performance and reduce complexity for our customers, while at the same time capturing additional RF content in high-growth markets,” said Liam K. Griffin, executive vice president and general manager of high performance analog at Skyworks, in a press release.

According to Oppenheimer & Co. Inc., worldwide shipments of smart phones are predicted to rapidly increase and reach one billion by 2015 while tablets are expected to surpass 125 million units. More importantly, these devices will have embedded GPS/GNSS functionality. Skyworks Solutions, Inc. is looking to capitalize on the potential that this added functionality provides.

In related news, Skyworks Solutions, Inc. recently announced that it received the 2011 Global Partnership Award from ZTE (News - Alert) for excellence in performance and worldwide cooperation. Skyworks was the only RF company honored with this achievement.
