Embedded M2M Solutions - GM Announces it Will Soon Offer Apple's Siri Technology in its Vehicles

General Motors (News - Alert) (GM) is taking a major step towards improving its vehicles’ technology. At the Los Angeles International Auto Show, the company revealed that it would be the first auto company on the market to integrate Apple’s (News - Alert) Siri technology into its automobiles.

In order to make its cars completely “hands” and “eye” free, GM will add a button to the steering wheel of its cars that, when pressed, will access Siri via Bluetooth from the user’s smart phone. GM said it plans to roll out the next-generation technology in its Chevrolet Sonic LTZ and RS, as well as Spark 1LT and 2LT.

In an official company statement, GM said that customers with a compatible iPhone (News - Alert) would now be able to work the Chevrolet MyLink infotainment system. Once the two devices are paired via Bluetooth, drivers will be able to make hands-free calls, play music directly from their iTunes, switch between the radio and CD player, send iMessages and text messages, listen to their upcoming appointments and find out answers to every day questions such as sports scores and weather.

“It says a lot about our commitment to small car customers that Chevrolet has announced that Siri Eyes Free capability will be available in the Spark and Sonic well before the luxury brands,” explained Cristi Landy, Chevrolet marketing director for small cars. “Safe, easy, reliable and portable connectivity is a top priority for our customers, and Siri complements MyLink’s existing capabilities to help deliver an incredible driving experience.”

Further, to help prevent distractions and glances downward torward the phone, when paired with the infotainment system, Siri will be unable to provide any answers that require it to display a website.

If you prefer the availability of a subscription-based service such as OnStar, fear not, as GM plans to continue offering the service to all customers, allowing for additional safety and security features.

GM did not release details on when the new Siri compatible cars will be available to consumers.
