Embedded M2M Solutions - Deutsche Telekom, Daimler Provide Online Services for Automobiles

Deutsche Telekom (News - Alert) and Daimler have teamed on providing new online services and Web applications for use in automobiles.

Both companies have recently announced a partnership directed toward promoting Daimler’s launch of communications services in its vehicles all across the globe.

New services resulting from the collaboration between Telekom and Daimler include real-time traffic information, mobility options, personal radio and access to social networks.

All online services and Mercedes-Benz apps can be used by drivers from anywhere in the world, thanks to the COMAND Online multimedia system.

Currently, Telekom is developing the communications infrastructure required for this solution from Daimler AG, and will equip all future Mercedes-Benz models with machine-to-machine (M2M) SIM chips to ensure adequate mobile transmission capacities.

Car buyers today are interested in more features than the basic offered by the manufacturer, according to Horst Leonberger, head of the "Connected Car" business area at Deutsche Telekom.

The demand for innovative online services and fast Internet connectivity in the cars is increasing, and Leonberger notes that Telekom is the only provider that offers a cloud infrastructure, services and connectivity from a single source.

“We are looking forward to working closely with Deutsche Telekom. The company is a strong partner that will boost our worldwide offering of mobile online services,” said Peter Häußermann, head of Electronics and Telematics at Daimler AG. “This will be evident at CeBIT (News - Alert), where we plan to show our product highlights at the Deutsche Telekom stand.”

Deutsche Telekom’s CEO, Rene Obermann, will step down at the end of this year to be succeeded by chief financial officer, Timotheus Hoettges.
