In an effort to provide a more flexible and compact upgrade path to 3G for applications based on GSM (global systems for mobile communications)/GPRS (general packet radio service) in the North American market, Telit Wireless (News - Alert) Solutions, a provider of machine-to-machine (M2M) solutions, has unveiled a new CDMA (code division multiple access) module, CL865-DUAL, which can provide machine-to-machine (M2M) connectivity compliant with many U.S. CDMA network operators.
Cited to be the company’s smallest CDMA module, the new CL865-DUAL measures 24.4x24.4x2.6mm and is designed for battery-powered wearable technology.
Offering CDMA data rates of 153.6 kbps from a VQFN package, the new CL865-DUAL module is embedded with a Python Script Language interpreter, which enables the processing core in the cellular engine to run customer applications internally. This eliminates the need for additional electronics.
The embedded Python Script Language interpreter also enables the CL865-DUAL module to access a companion Telit GPS/Glonass receiver module directly for a complete tracking device.
The CL865-DUAL's VQFN packaging also features full pad-level compatibility with the GL865-DUAL V3 module and the UL865 module series.
Mike Ueland, senior vice-president and general manager, Telit Wireless Solutions, said, "This compatibility provides developers a simple drop-in migration to GSM/GPRS or a technology upgrade to high-speed 3G performance for designs based on the CL865-DUAL."
The CL865-DUAL, which is built on a dual-band CDMA/1XRTT engine, is voice-capable, supporting analog and digital (DVI) interfaces. Due to the CDMA/1XRTT engine, it is capable of delivering CDMA/1XRTT IS-95A/B and CDMA 2000 compliant data communications.
In addition, the CL865-DUAL module is also provided with a USB 2.0 full speed port, full serial and two-wire UARTs (uiversal asynchronous receivers/transmitters), eight user-definable GPIO (general-purpose input/output) ports and one analog to digital (A/D) converter.
Prior to the release of this module, Telit recently unveiled a compact 3G-only-cellular module, UL865, which also incorporates a Python Script Language interpreter.
According to Telit, the new 3G-only UL865 data-only module series delivers HSPA (high speed packet access) data rates of 7.2Mbps down and 5.76 Mbps up and will be available in a variant compliant with band and operator requirements for the North American market.
