Embedded M2M Solutions - Technicolor in Pact with IBM for Analytics of IoT and M2M Cloud Services


Technicolor, a provider of technology for media and entertainment sector, in partnership with IBM (News - Alert), has launched a service that provides businesses with cloud-based monitoring and management services for “Internet of Things” (IoT) and machine-to-machine (M2M) services.


Virdata, the new service, features a real-time and historical big data analytics stack. The solution is ideal for consumer electronics, automotive, utilities, health, industrial automation and retail sectors.

The company is leveraging IBM SoftLayer cloud capabilities to deliver elastic and scalable services to clients. The partnership with IBM will help Technicolor (News - Alert) bring an exciting new approach to IoT services, Virdata said.

Softlayer operates a global cloud infrastructure platform built for Internet scale. It provides an Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) to customers ranging from Web start-ups to global enterprises.

Virdata enables businesses to conduct faster and more thorough analysis of big data. With this solution, Virdata addresses the needs of the expanding digital market and helps customers leverage existing assets for scale or access to broader ecosystems.

Both Virdata and IBM will demonstrate the solution at the 2014 International CES (News - Alert). The companies will demonstrate several capabilities of Virdata including geo location and real-time and historical data for a tablet; utilizing on-board diagnostics (OBD) to analyze performance data in a connected car as well as fleet management; and tracking patient data with a heartbeat monitor.

Technicolor technologies and IBM have been collaborating to build open standards around cloud platform. The companies are developing innovative solutions in the connected world, thereby enabling an unprecedented number of uses for all industries.

Several advanced development activities in the big data analytics and visualization technologies domains have paved the way for the IBM and Virdata relationship that is focused on delivering IoT and M2M services to the consumer electronics market as well as other opportunities on a worldwide basis, company officials said.

Recently, Virdata released its extension of CHEF abstraction layer FOG, a DEVOPS tool, to the community, thereby facilitating additional on-boarding optimization for other Softlayer customers. Virdata has also embraced open source technologies such as the Cloud Foundry and OpenStack initiatives.

Virdata will operate as a “pay-as-you-go” solution.  Virdata has also joined the Smart TV Alliance, which brings together CE companies, application developers, content providers, and software and technology providers to facilitate the development of interactive content for TV displays.
