Embedded M2M Solutions - Cavium Teams with Sprint Partner Intel to Offer Optimized Intel WiDi-Based Display Solution

Cavium, a provider of semiconductor products that enable intelligent processing for networking, communications, and digital home applications, announced it has formed a partnership with Intel (News - Alert) to offer Intel WiDi-based products for the delivery of best-in-class wireless display consumer experience.

The partnership brings an end-to-end solution that combines Intel WiDi's ease-of-use and innovation with Cavium's super low latency technology and advanced video processing techniques, company officials said.

The resulting solution helps further enhance Intel WiDi's interactivity and broaden its target applications.

Intel WiDi is a leading wireless display PC solution. It has been received well in the industry. Major PC OEMs are now offering the second generation of Intel WiDi, with 1080p resolution, 5.1 multi-channel sound, and HDCP content protection for delivering premium content, company officials said.

Leveraging Cavium's highly integrated, low latency PureVu media processors, customers can deliver a new line of Intel WiDi compatible receivers that offer best-in-class wireless content sharing for next generation Intel notebooks, tablets, and handsets.

The partnership also enables TV and PC monitor OEMs to adopt   Cavium's media processors for their next generation products and offer the enhanced Intel WiDi experience as an integrated function inside the display.

"Intel and Cavium share a common vision of enabling an immersive wireless display consumer experience,” said Kourosh Amiri, Sr. director of Marketing at Cavium's Digital Home and Office Division, in a statement. “Both companies are fully committed to the WiFi Alliance's (News - Alert) wireless display standardization efforts.”

According to Amiri, this collaboration will bring together the best of what the two companies have to offer to further enhance the wireless display market to deliver products that enable seamless content-sharing.

The companies also formed a marketing collaboration and agreed to work together to expand and grow the market for wireless display products. As a result of this partnership, OEMs specializing in this market will be able to offer Intel WiDi compatible receivers with Cavium's PureVu media SoC.

"Intel WiDi-based laptops have enjoyed a very rapid adoption in the market during the past two years, expected to pass the 20Mu mark by the end of 2011," said Kerry Forell, product manager at Intel Corporation, in a statement.

"Through this collaboration with Cavium, we expect our customers to be able to offer products with a broader range of wireless display capabilities, which in turn should translate to more choices and enhanced experience for consumers," Forell added.

Cavium is demonstrating the new Intel WiDi receivers at Cavium's suite at the 2012 International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, between Jan 10th and 13th.

Intel, mainly known for its processor capabilities, also specializes in several other technological areas. One such innovation is its M2M program. Intel remains competitive in the M2M landscape thanks to its partnership with Sprint (News - Alert), an embedded M2M solutions leader.

Speaking to TMCnet about the goal of the M2M program, Kevin Johnson (News - Alert), director of Connected Devices for Intel’s Embedded and Communications Group, said, “The consumer and embedded sectors are moving towards billions of connected devices enabled by new and richer classes of service. We view standards-based persistent device connectivity, security, and manageability as important factors for the success of M2M.”

“Intel’s focus in this industry is to help remove barriers and accelerate growth of M2M services worldwide,” Johnson added.
