Embedded M2M Solutions - Embedded M2M Solutions: Trimble Explains How Telematics Can Help Improve the Bottom Line

Simply put, telematics is the gathering of data and transmission of that data across communications networks for use in business processes. Telematics covers a wide range of technologies, from GPS handsets to sensors and more. Some companies might not be aware of the benefits of telematics but, when properly deployed – and the data properly analyzed and acted upon – telematics can really help companies improve their bottom line.

Nick Mitchell, vice president of global sales at Trimble, a company globally known for GPS and other telematics technologies, recently spoke with TMC (News - Alert) about the benefits of telematics solutions. Mitchell pointed out that telematics solutions can be helpful in many different verticals, especially companies that have a high operational cost in their fleet, such as transport logistics companies, or businesses that have vehicles which are constantly running. Telematics is also suited for companies that transport high-cost employees and need to ensure that, say, technicians arrive to an appointment on time.

Telematics can provide a variety of cost savings to businesses. Vehicles waste a lot of fuel every year because of poor driving, idling and driving too many unnecessary miles. Telematics solutions can help better plan operations to reduce fuel costs and even help managers decide which vehicles to purchases and how many to have in a particular fleet. Telematics can also help productivity by providing data that can be used in time and motion studies to analyze the organization of fleets. Mitchell cited an actual example of a company that was used to having all of its drivers arrive to pick up equipment at the same time every morning. After analyzing the telematics data, the company realized that it was creating a bottleneck and, by staggering arrival times by just 10 minutes per driver, it solved that problem and increased efficiency.

Some companies can see a return on investment in a matter of weeks after implementing telematics solutions. If the information reveals a significant problem that can be addressed quickly, the cost savings will be evident immediately.

In order to provide best-in-class services, Trimble (News - Alert) partners with companies like embedded M2M solutions specialist Sprint (News - Alert), which shares a dedication to innovation. For more information on Trimble and its solutions, click here.
